Stanfords have a history with Treloar college, we have supplied several minibuses for this special needs college in the past. This month we supplied them with another executive style minibus for their staff and pupils.

Treloar college was founded in 1907 by the then Lord Mayor of the City of London Sir William Purdie Treloar, who set up a ‘cripples’ fund as part of his mayoral appeal. Treloar College, at Holybourne, near Alton, has residential and day students from the age of 16 to 25 and provides education, therapy, medical care and independence training. Its sister establishment Treloar School provides similar services to children aged five upwards.

The last minibuses we built for Treloars were a Stanford speciality! Bespoke minibuses built to work for the unique needs of the college. We build our vehicles for our clients, we build to order to ensure they will work for the needs of the client. On this occasion we built two 4×4 Mercedes Sprinters, the college required 4×4 vehicles to handle the terrain in the local area. Treloar is located in a remote area and the college and school need to be able to pick up staff if the roads are in a bad condition. They also need to be able to transport pupils for medical reasons such as taking them to the nearest hospital located 15 miles away. Not having transportation that can manage difficult driving conditions is not an option.

The 4×4 model’s raised ride height, and all-wheel-drive chassis with advanced 4ETS automatic electronic traction control, mean it can take winter snow and ice, as well as the occasional off-road venture.

When speaking to the supplying dealer Orwells, College Transport Manager Mark Copping said: “We had some problems during a bad winter a few years ago and since then have been discussing the best way to equip ourselves to deal with spells of bad weather in the future. This vehicle is the outcome of that process.”

He continued: “We have students here for 50 weeks of the year and the college is in quite a remote location. If the weather turns nasty we have to be able to get our staff in. We also need a vehicle capable of getting students to the local hospital, which is 15 miles away, in all conditions. It’s a demanding requirement but the Sprinter 4×4 gives us everything we need.”

The interiors were finished to a high spec with electric power sockets and WiFi enabling the staff and pupils to work on their laptops and tablets. The Sprinters seat 16 and can accommodate 4 wheelchairs and 5 seated passengers.

Treloar have now added a new minibus to their school, our demo Iveco minibus. This was also a high spec minibus in keeping with Treloars other vehicles. Capable of carrying a large number of passengers and wheelchairs with an executive interior featuring two tone seats, colour changing lights and added USB sockets for the college.
